The Living Systems Alliance
Building resilient futures by designing and deciding in partnership with nature
Around the world, communities are rediscovering ways to live and lead in kinship with the living Earth. In times of accelerating disruption, these initiatives show us how people, places, and the wider community of life can transform our world together.
The Living Systems Alliance brings together five leading organisations (Transition Network International, The Biomimicry Institute, Global Ecovillage Network, Kincentric Leadership, and the Permaculture Association). Our collective work is to strengthen, scale and cultivate pathways for communities and regions to make decisions guided by nature’s wisdom – weaving place-based action into real, widespread change.
Why This Matters
Current systems are failing to recognise our deep interdependence with the living world. While awareness of our global challenges is growing, many people lack practical pathways and community support to take the meaningful action needed.
Nature has 3.8 billion years of wisdom to guide us. When local communities work together at the regional level – connecting across sectors and learning from each other and their living ecosystems – they can create powerful, lasting change that goes far beyond isolated projects.
This offers place-based approaches for communities to learn and act together across citizens and sectors. To make decisions with nature in mind and collaborate in creating a healthier, more resilient and biodiverse future. This is Bioregioning.
What We’re Creating
Over the next two years (2026-2027), the Alliance will:
Co-create practical tools An accessible multilingual toolkit for nature-centric design, decision-making, and governance – available for place-based partnerships and global networks to adapt and use.
Work with regional pioneers Partner with 8-10 regional networks worldwide to pilot, refine and deepen these approaches, supporting communities to act as catalysts of transformation and resilience.
Build a global community of practice Connect people, places, and movements that are bringing life’s intelligence into policy, planning, and everyday decisions.
Share inspiring stories Gather and celebrate real examples of communities working as “keystone species” – regenerating the living systems they belong to.
Our Approach
We’re drawing on decades of combined expertise in permaculture design, biomimicry, ecovillage living, kincentric leadership, and transition community building practices.
Our methodology includes:
- Deep nature connection and living systems literacy
- Co-production with diverse practitioners and regional partnerships
- Action research and real-world piloting
- Training and capacity building for hundreds of practitioners
- Wide dissemination across our international networks in 100+ countries
By working across movements and sharing knowledge, we stop working in isolation and instead design and create with nature and across our communities towards the clear, united approach our world needs.
